College Town Governors

Introduction from the Chair of Governors - Mrs Bernice Huelin

Welcome to College Town Infant and Nursery School website which packed full of valuable and interesting information regarding our school, the services it provides and the achievements of our children.

The Governing Body has statutory obligations to ensure that the Governors of the school run efficiently in line with Government legislation and the requirements of Bracknell Forest Local Authority (LA). Governors support the work of the school and have a responsibility to challenge and seek to enhance the practices of the school. These practices ultimately have a direct impact on the education and school experience of our children.

Governors take part in school life and carry out regular visits to experience first hand, the events and activities in which the children take part.

Governors are an invaluable tool in determining policies and procedures, how they are discussed and approved. Through these visits the Governing Body are able to monitor how these procedures are put into practice on a daily basis; we are then able to see the impact on childrens’ learning and social development with the school environment. Governors and staff believe that every child matters and aim to ensure that our children leave school having received the best opportunities in learning and are helped to develop essential skills to assist in their future.

Our Governing Body consists of 14 elected governors who are all volunteers from the parents and local community. This is broken down as follows:

    ·        3 Community Governors

    ·         3 LA Governors

    ·        5 Parent Governors

    ·        1 Teaching Staff Governor

    ·        1 Non-teaching Staff Governor

    ·        The Headteacher

The Governing Body meet twice each term, unless extra meetings are required and much of the work of the Governing Body takes place through its committees. We currently have three main committees which meet twice per term and then report to the Full Governing Body.

  • Staffing and Finance
  • Sites and Buildings
  • Curriculum and Pupil

The general administration of the Governing Body is carried out by the Clerk to the Governors who is responsible for ensuring that all committee meetings are properly supported and minuted and that the Governing Body complies with the requirements of the Local Authority.

If you are interested in becoming a school governor please do not hesitate to contact the Clerk or Chair via the school office. More information can be obtained from www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk following the link to Learning/school governors.

COLLEGE TOWN INFANT SCHOOL GOVERNOR NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the College Town Infant School Governor Newsletter

Firstly a big Thank You. So many of you took the time to complete our questionnaire and give us some really good feedback. Below you will see some of the headlines from this year’s results.

In addition we also thought we’d take the opportunity to remind you about the role of the Governing Body and how you can contact us.

It has been another very busy year at College Town and whilst we are all looking forward to the summer break we are equally excited about next year’s challenges. Thank you to all of the school community for your continued support.

So what does the Governing Body do?

The Governing Body is an extension to the school’s management team and is made up of volunteers. It has legal accountabilities and is responsible for setting and evaluating the school’s strategic direction and progress. It has a number of key responsibilities

·   Strategic Direction – evolving policies and frameworks to aid the Head and staff in the management of the school, agreeing the key priorities for the school development plan

·   Raising Standards – by ensuring that the curriculum is balanced and broadly based, setting targets for achievement and promoting high expectations

·   Monitoring & Evaluating – observing and questioning all aspects of the running of the school, analysing performance information, ensuring systems are in place to review progress, assessing effectiveness of policies

·   Management – ensuring that budget priorities are identified and the budget is well managed, recruitment of the Head Teacher, staffing

·   Most of these functions are undertaken through the use of committees. At College Town Infants we have three committees – Staffing & Finance, Curriculum & Pupil and Sites and Buildings. If you would like to know more about the remit of each of these committees then please take a look at the school website.

The Governors need to balance supporting the Head and the school while also being challenging, what is known as a critical friend. Much of the work of the Governing Body is achieved through sub committees that focus on key areas of the running of the school. Governors are supported in their duties with training and information provided by the local authority.

Who are we?

There a number of different types of Governor. This ensures a wide range of input to the management of the school.

Parent Governors:As the name suggests these are Governors who, at the time of their election, had children attending the school.

Your parent governors are: Sally Newcomb, Sara Young, Aisha Lee and Marc Barnett.

Community Governors:These Governors do not need to have children at the school but come from the wider community of the school.

Your community governors are: Lynne Fogarty and Sarah Holman

Local Authority Governors:These Governors are appointed by the Local Authority and are individuals who are interested in contributing to a school and its development.

Your LA Governors are: David Ware, Dan Currey and Tina McKenzie-Boyle.

Staff Governors:There are two staff governors on the governing body one from the teaching staff and one from the non-teaching staff.

Your staff Governors are: Kay Dawson and Pete Norman

The Head Teacher is also a member of the Governing body and is supported by the Deputy Head (an associate member with no voting rights). There is also a Clerk to the Governors who ensures that accurate records of meetings are kept and that all of the legal requirements are being observed. We are very lucky to have Louise Kinsella as our Clerk. We currently have Community Governor vacancies so if you know of somebody who would be interested please let us know.

At the start of next term we’ll be posting up a brief profile about each of our Governors and a picture so that you can learn more about us and know who to look out for on the school website.

How can you contact us?

The Governors can be contacted via the school. Letters can be left in the Governors pigeon hole. Anything left for the Governors will not be opened by school staff so you can be assured of confidentiality. Alternatively office staff can provide telephone numbers for Governors should you wish to talk to somebody.
